March is Women’s History Month, a time to reflect on the often overlooked contributions women have made throughout history. From scientists and activists to artists and world leaders, women have shaped our society in countless ways. We celebrate the women who fought for equal rights and new opportunities so that future generations could dream bigger dreams. Women’s History Month allows us to be inspired by how far women have come.

History

Women’s History Month originated from a week-long celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history and society. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8th as National Women’s History Week. Over the next five years, Congress passed additional resolutions to support celebrating women’s history annually. Finally in 1987, Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month as a time to specifically recognize women’s impact across the full expanse of history. Since then, every president has issued annual proclamations demonstrating the importance of using Women’s History Month to honor those often overlooked stories of women who helped shape our nation.

Women in Business

According to the Census Bureau Annual Business Survey in 2018, more than 12 million businesses are women-owned. These businesses span career fields and employ more than 10 million people. Forbes reported women-owned businesses’ average revenue in 2022 increased by 27%, 5% more than male-owned businesses.

Small businesses are the backbone of small towns across the country. Local stores, restaurants and professional services provide jobs, character and economic growth. Supporting women-owned small businesses has an even greater community impact. When female entrepreneurs can thrive, it creates more diversity in community leadership and provides role models for young girls.

One of the many things that makes Frostburg unique is the amount of women-owned small businesses. Madison Paige Boutique, Baker Babes and Ladybug Boutique are just some of the amazing women-owned small businesses you can support. These women care about their communities and have made an impact through their services. Support these women by visiting them in their stores, purchasing an item and thanking them.
