Happy New Year and welcome to our first Downtown Frostburg update of 2021! We hope you had a safe, cozy, and refreshing Holiday season full of friends, family, and joy! We spent the Holidays supporting our local small businesses and taking some time to reflect on the past year, a challenging one to say the least; and to think of new ways to help you enjoy and explore our beautiful Mountain Maryland community. Thanks to the Storybook Holiday Committee the 2020 holiday season had some extra help: the parking meters on Main, Water, and Broadway streets were festively and cheerfully decorated by our very own community in a celebration titled, ‘Deck the Meters’!

The meters on Main Street were decorated with re-creations of scenes from iconic Christmas films, traditional Christmas decorations, and more! On Water Street, a meter was redesigned as a healthcare worker Nutcracker and on Broadway Street, the Frostburg Bridge Program drew cartoons to spread Holiday cheer. Not to mention the very popular skier on Main Street that stopped traffic! So much creativity was demonstrated by individuals, businesses, organizations, and families local to Frostburg! A tremendous thank you is owed to the FSU Chlldren’s Literature Centre and Peggy Atkinson of P.S. Hair Design for their efforts in organizing such a successful project.

To celebrate the hard work of both the Storybook Holiday Committee and our community, we took to our Instagram account throughout the month of December to showcase a different decorated parking meter each day on our page. We shared photos of the meters with descriptions about what it had been ‘beautified’ with and to what theme, purpose, message, or reference. We enjoyed picking a new meter each day to showcase and our audience seemed to enjoy following which one would be shared and picking their favorites! As part of the organization, winners were chosen by voting in categories distinguished by the type of party (individual, family, etc.) and presented to us by the Storybook Holiday Committee for us to share!

  • Individual: “Holiday Barbie 2018” – Shelby Hutcheson
  • Family: “Gnome Holiday” – The Schockey Family
  • Business/Organization: “Doctor Nutcracker” – Gonzaga Family Health
  • Honorable Mention: “Yeti/Abominable Snowman” – Ella Valentine & Linda Lemmert
  • Grand Prize: “Skier” – The Walbert Family

Please enjoy this selection of meters from the event! Over 70 meters were decorated this year!
