The Project
FrostburgFirst received a grant through the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development’s Main Street Improvement Program to design, print, and install 70 lamppost banners from the Depot to Main Street, along Main Street from Grant Street to Water Street, and down Broadway and Water Street. The Arts and Entertainment District Committee seeks an artist/designer to create a design for the banners that will celebrate Frostburg’s culture and create a welcoming feel on Main Street for visitors and community members. This opportunity is open to graphic designers, arts professionals, and students located in Allegany and Garrett counties. The application deadline is EXTENDED to Monday, January 22, by 12:00 pm.
The Award
$500 will be awarded for the winning design approach.
Project Intent
The lamppost banners will help to create a “sense of place” in the heart of Frostburg’s Main Street and Arts and Entertainment districts by highlighting the City’s unique character and culture and adding a splash of color to the streetscape. Banners will be placed from the Depot to Main Street, along Main Street from Grant Street to Water Street, and down Broadway and Water Street. The Depot is the nexus from which most of our tourists emerge from the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and the Great Allegheny Passage. The banners lining the walk from the Depot to Main Street will help welcome and guide tourists to our downtown. Banners lining Main Street will welcome the thousands of drivers that ride our historic national highway, Route 40, weekly. The vision for the design is to celebrate our local culture and heritage such as the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, the Great Allegheny Passage, Frostburg State University, our Appalachian arts, crafts, and music performances, and designs may include or incorporate themes of our “It’s Just Cooler Here” tagline. The banner design should:
- Enhance our streetscape with colors and designs that pop and create a welcoming atmosphere;
- Be simple in design for visibility and interpretation by pedestrian and bicycle traffic;
- Demonstrate artistic excellence;
- Incorporate design themes to celebrate our local culture and heritage;
- Be an original design.
Additional Information:
The selected artist will have the option to enter a contract for an additional $500 to make the design production-ready, which must be sufficient for all edits and design modifications.
FrostburgFirst and the Frostburg Arts and Entertainment District Committee are under no obligation to award a contract for design based on the Lamppost Banner Design proposal submitted. Beyond formal notifications, FrostburgFirst and the Frostburg Arts and Entertainment District Committee will not enter any correspondence regarding their decision.
