Hey all! My name is Torie. I am a 20-year-old junior pursuing a major in English with a concentration in Professional Writing at Frostburg State University (FSU). With such a close-knit writing community on campus, I recently decided to minor in Journalism.

I originally transferred from a community college back home, Howard Community College (HCC), nearing the end of my sophomore year of college (Spring 2017). Before transferring, I was a General Studies major because I had no clue what I wanted to fully dedicate my life to. However, I knew I wanted to follow my passion—writing.

During my time at HCC, I submitted an original prose piece titled, “Piggy Blaze” for my creative writing class. At the time, my professor pulled me aside and invited me to perform my piece in a show with Arts Collective’s, “What Improv Group?!?!” (W.I.G.), HCC’s Creative Writers, and the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society (HoCoPoLitSo). I ended up reading “Piggy Blaze” on stage in front of hundreds of people and received amazing feedback. Shortly after, my piece was published in the Spring 2017 edition of The Muse, The Literary and Arts Magazine of HCC.

During my first semester (Spring 2017) at FSU, I launched my very own website, The Drunk Pen. This site includes my original and unfiltered poetry for the public to view with ease.

Although, this past fall, I also fell in love with journalistic writing. I became a member of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society and joined The Bottom Line (TBL), FSU’s independent student news organization as a News Writer.

Aside from writing, in my free time I enjoy hiking, surfing, skating and longboarding when the weather and location permits it. During the summer, I foster puppies for non-profit animal rescue groups in Howard County, MD. I also have a love for yoga, weight-lifting, and traveling. Internationally, I’ve traveled to Austria, Liechtenstein, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, Trinidad & Tobago, the United Kingdom (U.K.).

Most of my inspiration is drawn from my past and recent experiences. I typically find myself reflecting on these experiences and putting that energy towards whatever project I am pursuing at the time. For instance, traveling has broadened my perspective on life in more ways than one. Reflecting on my travels allows me to keep an open mind in terms of culture, diversity, lifestyle, etc. I also gain inspiration through collaboration with my peers. I constantly try to surround myself with an array of various perspectives that help me expand my creative outlet.

I have a love for nearly every business in Frostburg, but as of now, my top 3 are definitely Shift, Clatter Coffee and Independent Ink. Each of these businesses are unique in their own ways and bring their own touch to this small town. As a vegetarian, I absolutely love Shift. This farm to table eatery has something in store for everyone without breaking the bank. While offering delicious food paired with a bicycle-themed setting, this local corner spot is definitely one of my favorites. Right down the street from Shift lies Clatter, a relatively new business to Frostburg. This local coffee shop has an amazing vibe, tasteful café menu, and a relaxing atmosphere. Whenever I find time to destress, work on schoolwork, or grab breakfast with some friends, I always find myself in Clatter. Meanwhile, Independent Ink, the tattoo and piercing studio, is made up of incredibly talented artists with awesome personalities. I recommend this place to anyone looking for their next tattoo and/or piercing.

I enjoy living in Frostburg because it is so different from my hometown, Ellicott City, MD. The scenery here is unbelievable, there are plenty of hiking trails, and it isn’t too crowded. I also love Frostburg’s Main Street, as it is filled with diverse businesses and entertainment.

As an intern for FrostburgFirst, I hope to gain even more experience with our local businesses and broaden my professional horizon. I look forward to professionally utilizing social media and improving my writing across various outlets.
