Sunday, August 9th, kicks off Maryland Tax-Free Week! All qualifying clothing and shoes (up to $100 value for each individual item) and the first $40 off of backpacks will be tax-free through Saturday August 15th. Retailers selling masks can also forgo tax on those for the week as well though they are not currently listed on the tax-free items list (see taxable and exempt items list).
“This is one of my favorite weeks of the year because it’s a win for shoppers and businesses while jolting Maryland’s economy during the slow summer months,” said Comptroller Peter Franchot. “This year more than ever, it’s critical to shop local to support the small retailers who are going above and beyond to continue paying employees, creating a safe environment for customers and finding new ways to sell their products during a global pandemic.”
Typically tax-free week is a good opportunity for back-to-school shopping for students, but this year it can also be a good week to stock up your fall wardrobe while supporting small businesses that you were unable to visit earlier in the year. Retailers, and small business owners especially, rely on the holidays and back to school rush to help them thrive.
This year businesses have been forced to adopt new ways of selling and promoting and need your support more than ever. Tax-free week offers the perfect opportunity for you to save while getting everything you need for the coming Fall and supporting the small business owners of your community.
Additionally, The Maryland Retailers Association is conducting its annual scholarship contest in conjunction with Tax Free Week. They are offering two scholarships worth $1000 and $500 respectively to any college, university, or trade school student in Maryland who helped a business Keep the Lights On during COVID-19. The University System of Maryland has generously offered to match the $1000 scholarship if the winning student attends a USM institution. If you would like to nominate any students, please share their story on social media with the hashtag #ShopMDTaxFree, or submit by email to shopmdtaxfree@marylandtaxes.
