Welcome Home: A Spotlight Blog on Frostburg State University Homecoming

Homecoming is a weekend full of fun events and activities for current students, Frostburg alumni, and community members to come together and celebrate Frostburg State University. From the football game, the Hall of Fame Induction ceremony, the pep rally, to the Retired Employee Luncheon, there are so many events celebrating being a Bobcat! Whether you are interested in athletics, the arts, reunions, or connecting with friends, old and new, FSU’s Homecoming weekend has it all!

This year’s Homecoming is hosting more than 27 different events throughout the four day weekend. Starting on Thursday, October 25th and running until Sunday, October 28th, special events will be held at various locations around the Frostburg State University Campus, at 101 Braddock Road. Homecoming is a great opportunity for alumni and students alike to reunite and enjoy all the fun FSU has to offer.

Each year 2,000 to 3,000 alumni visit the local Frostburg area! One such alumnus, Paul Reutershan, has created a group that connects fellow Bobcats from around the world through his Facebook page “50 Shades of Frostburg.” Paul first started the Facebook page in honor of his 50th Birthday at FSU’s homecoming in 2015. What initially began as a group of 150 of his close friends has now gone viral and become a page of over 10,000 members! The Facebook group provides a place for reconnection and memories among FSU friends. The group also works to stay active and charitable within the Frostburg community and has donated over $100,000 in the last four years to local organizations and FSU scholarships. Regarding the page’s success, Paul stated, “I had no idea it would get so big. I love Frostburg and it appears so many other alumni, residents, and people around the world were looking for a place to celebrate the Burg. It has become the meeting place for all things Frostburg-related on Facebook. It’s really changed my life, and for all the right reasons.” For Paul and many of the members, Frostburg brings a character and feeling that only “those who know” understand. The page is not only a way for friends from Frostburg to connect, but allows any FSU alumni or student to network and gain relationships that can be beneficial for them for the future! The closeness that the small town and University provide brings people together, and through “50 Shades of Frostburg” this closeness and friendship can be maintained for years to come. “My Frostburg friends are FAMILY,” expressed Paul.

The Alumni Center and the Student Educational Services work together to create and host the four-day long Homecoming event. For alumni, it’s more than just a football game, it is an opportunity to come back to “their home for four years; it’s a place where they [alumni] have made many relationships. They may have met their best friend or their spouse here. It’s really a coming home for them,” stated Shannon Gribble, Director of Alumni and Donor Relations. Whether you are a current student, alumni, or just a Frostburg community member we hope to see you at Frostburg State University’s homecoming weekend!
