Volunteers invest over 15,000 hours into downtown Frostburg in 2016

Volunteers water flower baskets along Main Street

FrostburgFirst would like to thank the scores of community members, volunteer organizations, the City of Frostburg, and Frostburg State University faculty, staff, and students who volunteered their time towards beautifying and enhancing the quality of life in downtown Frostburg this year.  In 2016, FrostburgFirst reported 15,932 volunteer hours to the Maryland Main Street Program for various community projects and events.

According to independentsector.org, the value of volunteerism equals $23.56 per hour, equating over $375,000 worth of volunteer services invested in Frostburg’s downtown this year!  Some of the volunteer projects included clean-up and beautification efforts, event planning committees, lamppost flower basket maintenance, and Holiday wreath decorating on Main Street.

Each Spring, Frostburg State University’s Office of Civic Engagement, the City of the Frostburg, and various contributing community members organize Beautify the Burg.  Over 200 FSU students and community members gather from 8 am – 12 pm and are assigned to wash windows, lay mulch, plant flowers, pick up trash, paint lampposts, as well as various other projects around town.

The Frostburg Lamppost Committee and Frostburg Garden Club also contribute heavily to our downtown.  The Lamppost Committee installs holiday wreaths on downtown lampposts, organizes the acquisition and installation of Christmas trees in the St. Michael Catholic Church courtyard and at Mountain Ridge High School, and plans the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony.  Members of the Garden Club plant flowers in 63 lamppost baskets in downtown, the Depot, and the GAP Trailhead; these flower baskets are watered daily from Spring through Fall. In the Fall, club members place colored lights and greenery in each of the baskets for the Holiday Season.

Frostburg is so proud of and thankful for the continuous efforts of our volunteers.  Their dedication truly enhances our downtown and helps make Main Street, Frostburg a more vibrant and beautiful place to live, work, and play.
