FrostburgFirst, in cooperation with the City of Frostburg, is accepting proposals for a public art project for the Frostburg Arts & Entertainment District. If a proposal is chosen for implementation, it will be installed in the grassy area located by the City’s public parking lot on Mechanic Street between Broadway and Water Street. A public art project (Bodies in Motion) was installed last year in the city parking lot on 1st Street behind St. Michael’s to help increase awareness of public parking availability while beautifying the downtown. The project was a true demonstration of collaboration between Frostburg State University, FrostburgFirst, and the City of Frostburg, as well as internationally known muralist Jules Muck.

The current opportunity is open to any qualified artist or team of artists working collaboratively to create a piece of public art. The request is for proposals only at this time, with the plan to potentially implement the chosen proposal in 2022. Three winners will be chosen by a review panel to be considered for implementation. The grand prize winner will be awarded $500, with a runner up receiving $300, and an honorable mention with $100. The prize money is made possible through a Maryland State Arts Council’s public art planning grant. If a project is chosen for implementation and the project moves forward, the artist will be provided with a stipend and reimbursement for materials and labor.

The design must be suitable and acceptable for public display for viewing by citizens of all ages. FrostburgFirst is looking for a permanent (5 – 10 year life cycle) public art installation. Preference will be given to proposals that include the use of sustainable or recycled materials, are kinetic or interactive, and celebrate the natural beauty of Frostburg.
